Before independence Raigarh was a princely state i.e. a state that was not directly governed by the British during the British Raj but were ruled by a local ruler under a form of indirect rule subject to a subsidiary alliance of the British crown. The district of Raigarh was first formed by merging the princely states of Sakti, Raigarh, Udaipur (Dharamjaigarh), Sarangarh and Jashpur. Although Jashpur and Sakti are now not part of Raigarh.

Raigarh is the district headquarters and it’s famous for its growing industrial sectors and diverse cultural practices in the state. It's known at the cultural capital but is slowly acquiring the name as industrial capital as well. It is home to one of the oldest jute mills in India known as Mohan jute mills. They are also one of the major producers of steel in country. The city runs on its number of steel and power plants such as MSP, JSPL, Monnet steel, and many other small and medium producers that have played a great part in the growth and development of the city.The most common languages spoken in the city are mostly Chhattisgarhi, Oriya and Hindi. There are also large populations of Bengali, Telugu, Marathi, Bihari and other communities living here.

Nagar Nigam Raigarh is the administrative authority (Municipality) of the city of Raigarh in Chhattisgarh. They are in charge of controlling and maintaining flood & disaster control planning, maintaince of urban infrastructure, issuing of birth and death certificates, looking after sewages and sanitation issues and more. Nagar Nigam Raigah is headed by Mayor who is assisted by Commissioner in discharging his duties.

Agriculture Department in Raigarh
