Brief History of Raigarh

About RaigarhBefore Independence, Raigarh was a princely state and was not directly governed by the British but by a local rulers responsible for running the affairs of their respective state.After Independence, Raigarh was the first princely state to join the Union of India. You can still find the remains of the medieval and colonial era in this part of Chhattisgarh. Though the Royal family still resides in Raigarh but with times royalty has faded. Festivals of Raigarh
Dusshera, Deepavali, Holi, Govardhan Pooja, Pola, Nawakhai are some of the popoular feativals of the region,celebrated with much enthusiasm and excitement . Hariyali and Cherta are other two famous festivals celebrated in this region. Hariyali is celebrated in the month of 'Shravan'. This festival symbolizes agricultural prosperity. Farm tools and cows are worshiped by the farmers.Cherta is a harvest festival that’s celebrated by all communities. Here the children go around the whole village collecting rice from each household which is later prepared on the banks of a nearby water body by married women.

Geography of RaigarhRaigarh is surrounded by Sarguja and Jashpur districts in north, Orissa in the east, Mahasamund district on the south Korba and Janjgir-Champa districts in the west. The district lies between latitude 21°22'- 22°42' North latitude and 82°55' to 83°49' East longitude covering an area of about 6530 sq.kms.This district varies topographically with the lofty forest clad plateau of Pandrapat and Khuria that you’ll find in the north to the dusty plains Raigarh and Sarangarh in the south.
Also referred as cultural capital and industrial capital of Chhattisgarh, Raigarh has an average elevation of 215 metres (705 feet). The Kelo river flows through the city, which is one of its main water sources. The average temperature range is 29.5 - 49 °C in summer, and 8 - 25 °C in winter. Transportation in Raigarh

Auto-Ricksaws, hand pulled rickshaws and Taxis form a major part of local transportation network in the city of Raigarh. You can book taxi to reach other parts of the city or for traveling to other parts of the district. Raigarh is well connected via roadways to other parts of the state and country. As far as connectivity to other parts of the country is concerned there is sufficient modes for transportation. The Raigarh station is located on the Tatanagar Bilaspur section of Howrah-Nagpur-Mumbai line. It comes under the Bilaspur railway division. It is well connected with many major cities like New Delhi, Mumbai,  Kolkata, Patna, Ahmedabad, Jaipur etc. The Bilaspur railway station is a regional hub which can take at a distance of 132km from Raigarh. The main railway station Raigarh is situated near the heart of the city. Kirodimal Nagar railway station is another suburb station of Raigarh city. In July 2013, the state government signed a memorandum of understanding with the Airport Authority of India to make Raigarh airport as the states second airport for domestic flights. They have proposed a four lane on NH 216 which is set to connect the airport to the city to make it more efficient. There is also a private airport located 10km north west of the city owned by the Jindal Steel and Power Limited.

Culture of Raigarh

Referred as cultural capital of Chhattisgarh Raigarh has been a melting pot of various traditions and cultures. The cultural richness of the region lies in its dance, color and music. Lot of famous Katthak dancers like Vijaya Sharma, Firtu Maharaj belongs to this region. Pt. Kartik Ram, Pt. Kalyan Das Mahant, Pt. Barman Lal are only a few names of famous artist belonging to this part of Chhattisgarh.

Badakhol wildlife sanctuary: You will find various species of animals and birds here. Some of the animals include tigers, panther, antelope, and sambhar etc. November to February is the best time to visit the sanctuary.

Kabra Pahari: This spot is every architectural buffs paradise. It’s studded with ancient caves which are decorated with pre-historic paintings.

Balaji Temple: The temple is filled with paintings of Lord Ram’s Life and it’s situated near Raigarh Chhattisgarh.
